Officially, your passport only needs to be valid for the entirety of your stay in Mexico, not six months beyond, according to Mexican immigration law. However, some airlines may require 6 months of validity to board, so it is highly recommended to check with your airline specifically. Land vs. air rules are generally consistent for both air and land travel; simply ensure it is not expired.
